Lisa Allan and her daughter Lyla, joined other children and parents in a reading and audience participation activity for toddlers at the North Wales Library.
Pottstown area resident Sarah Campbell, or “Miss Sarah” to the 34 children that attended, signed the songs and Valentine’s-themed stories told by library staffer Vicki Cresswell. A professional American Sign Language interpreter, Campbell’s appearance was courtesy of a Montgomery County grant-funded program for libraries across the county. “Libraries are focusing on offering story time to all kids,” said library director Jayne Blackledge, noting that North Wales Library also has a new story time for special needs children that would be better served in a smaller group.
Campbell, who in her work gets called upon to bridge language barriers between the hearing and non-hearing in a variety of situations, said that it didn’t matter if there were deaf or hearing impaired children present or not. “They want children exposed to the language,” she said.
